A sum of $60,000 has been inserted for commencing the erection of rented quarters for certain European subordinates, which has been approved in your despatch No.171 of the 9th July, 1914. In my despatch No.204 of the 11th June, 1914, I estimated the cost of these quarters at $108,000, but the preparation of complete plans has shown the necessity for bringing the figures up to $120,000, the increase being mainly due to the cost of preparing,
the selected site.
In accordance with the approval conveyed in your despatch of the 10th July, 1914, I have made provision under iteras 16 and 57 for commencing the quarters for European subordinate officers in Hongkong and Kowloon.
Communications · The excess of $32,000 over the original estimate for the Aberdeen to Deep Water Bay Road is due to a decision to construct a 20 foot road instead of a 16 foot as was originally proposed.
The Public Works Committee of the Legislative Council urged strongly that the width of the road should be increased.
The provision under item 18(c) is for cutting back the dangerous corners of the road so as to render it safe for motor
